I am actually late for something because I responded to this nice young man who wanted me to know he’d never stolen from me, but wondered what my policy on stealing from me was.
UPDATE: I am not angry with this particular young man.
This is exactly my view on piracy as well. There is so much good legitimate free entertainment out there, that it is ridiculous that you would ever have to pirate. People try to justify this by saying it only hurts the corporations. Who do you think pays the artists? Who makes the decision about what albums to publish or movies to make? Furthermore, what metric do you think is used to measure an artist’s popularity when a venue is determining whether or not they should book an artist?
I understand that it sucks to not have the latest album/movie/whatever. But it must suck even more to put your everything into making it and know your fans, who claim to love your work, don’t love it enough to support you in any tangible way. We are not entitled to entertainment simply because we know how to access Pirate Bay, especially in a world where Hulu, podcasts, Tumblr, Twitter and a million other things I’m not thinking of exist.
